Exodus 21  “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’ 6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

Exodus 21 is right after the 10 commandments are given. Right after the dramatic Exodus from slavery where they themselves were slaves in Egypt, God tells them that the first thing you should know about slaves is that they should go free. For nothing. That the people should not be enslaved forever, but offered the chance to go free after a limited time of service.  After that, the slave might choose to stay – out of love for the master – but that should be a matter of free choice.

If the slave wanted to be a slave forever to his master. He would go through a ceremony that would make him a bondservant, a slave for life. A willing slave, not one forced to be a slave, but someone who has chosen slavery.

Let’s look at the ceremony a little more.

Think about the ceremony,  Nails driven through flesh? Blood on doorframes? Permanent piercing, with holes and scars forever? Does it sound at all familiar?!

They would pierce or bore a hole through the skin of the earlobe, marking the flesh permanently. When people would see your pierced ear, your scarred ear; they would know without a doubt what and who you were, a bondservant, forever serving your master out of love.

Jesus also has permanent scars. His scars also came about from having his fleshed pierced on wood, as a result of love, and willing submission to serve.

He still has scars on his hands to this day, and forever – a permanent mark of his great love and willing servanthood.

When we think of doorframes in the Bible, we think back to the Exodus story itself. The moment when the Israelites were liberated from forced slavery, and were delivered into freedom, where they willingly entered into a covenant with their God – to follow his commandments. Blood on the doorframe is one of the most iconic images of this transfer from slavery into following a new Master in freedom. The blood of the Messiah from his pierced flesh on the cross, the blood of the Passover lamb on the lintels, and the blood of the slave who for love agrees to serve his master willingly.

Think of a door as a portal, taking you from the outside to the inside, it represents change. Crossing over the threshold, through the door, must be voluntary. And Jesus presents us with that opportunity. He IS that portal, he IS the door to the Kingdom of Heaven. It is no accident or mere matter of convenience that the servant is brought to a door for this ritual.

What can we do?

Throughout the New Testament, the word bondservant, slave, or servant is applied metaphorically to someone absolutely devoted to Jesus. Paul, Timothy, James, Peter, and Jude all describe themselves as “bondservants of Christ”.

Remember that believers today should still consider themselves bondservants or slaves of Christ (1 Corinthians 7:22; Ephesians 6:6; 2 Timothy 2:24). He is our Lord, and our allegiance is due to Him alone. We have no other masters (Matthew 6:24) and we give ourselves totally to Him (Matthew 16:24).

Let me finish off by reading Romans 6:22 “Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life”.

Let us pray. Father, thank You so much that because of what You did on the cross, because You were pierced first and because You became a willing slave to Your Father, we have freedom and we have new life.  We thank You first of all for Your great sacrifice.  Thank You that You did it first, not because we loved You first, but because You loved us first.  Father, I pray that as we remember Exodus 21, we must be bondservants to You.  We remember that when we chose to follow You, we chose that You would become our Master, that we would obey You and listen to You all the time.  And whatever You say, we will do, whatever You want, we will do.  Our lives are no longer our lives.  Our lives belong to You.  Remind us of this today.  Help us to live for Your Kingdom as You want us to.  Amen.
