In the year 155 AD lived a man called Polycarp, a devout follower of Christ. He was 86 years old when he was dragged before a crowd to be killed as a martyr. He was given opportunities to renounce Jesus. He said, “Eighty-six years I have been his servant, and he has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my king who saved me?”  He was eventually killed by the sword after they tried to burn him alive.

Today’s devotion is from Luke 9, and specifically 18-23, The disciples are with Jesus when he asks them 2 challenging questions. First, he says, “Who do the people say that I am?” He wasn’t asking because he didn’t know the answer, being God, he knew the answer, God doesn’t use google. He was teaching the disciples in this moment. They answer with, in verse 19, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

And then Jesus asks a question that is direct and personal. He asks, “Who do you say I am?”
Peter replies, “You are the messiah.”

Jesus moves the disciples from what does the world think of me, to a very personal and intimate question. He wants to know if they believe he is the messiah. Who is Jesus to you? To some he is merely a great man who was remarkable because of how he loved people. To some he was a mastermind terrorist who wanted to overthrow the Roman government. To some he was an angelic being who visited earth.

Jesus asked this question because of how important it is, your view of Jesus is important. If he was just a man then he couldn’t have taken away your sins. If he was only an angel he couldn’t have risen from the dead to be seated at the father’s right hand, a place reserved for the first born son. I’m going to call your view of him the vertical, it affects your relationship with God.

Just a few verses later Jesus says the famous verse, verse 23, “Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’” A verse we know so well. I’ll call this verse the horizontal, it affects our everyday daily lives. How we treat others, our attitude.

I believe this verse is connected to what he was asking the disciples. Do you believe that I am the messiah? Then take up your cross daily and follow me.
The vertical and the horizontal are connected.

Let’s go back to the martyr Polycarp, he understood who Jesus was and this affected the way he handled daily life. He wasn’t afraid of the fire, he said that the fire of judgement for unbelievers will be far worse and since he was child of God he had nothing to fear. He lived right in the middle of the intersection between the vertical and the horizontal. If you think you know who Jesus is but don’t live it out then do you really know Jesus as you should? Conversely If you really know him, then he will live through you, through the Holy Spirit. It will be evident.

If you’ve failed to live as you should and haven’t got it right lately, pray for forgiveness and know that God is gracious and will forgive you and give you another chance to know who he is and to live for him. Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, thank You so much that You give us another day, another opportunity to live for You. Help us as we think of You to have right view of who You are. You are the Messiah. You are worth living for. You are worth dying for daily. Because of who You are. In doing that every day, we have nothing to fear. So help us to be bold followers of Yours. Amen.
