Today’s passage is from Luke 13:22-35.

In this passage Jesus is answering a question that a person asked him. He is comparing salvation to a house. You need to enter the house through a narrow door. Many of us would miss the door because we were looking for something different. We look for a door that is beautiful, irresistible. But not this door, this door isn’t what you expect. It’s narrow, small, and humble. It’s a door that you need to look for. It’s a door many miss because the gospel sounds too simple. God’s grace saved us and we need only respond to him and make him our king. They want a door where they have to work hard for salvation or pay a great sacrifice for it. Some want a door that where others can see them going in and marvel at how wonderful they are, and fortunate that they are allowed in. This is a door that is hidden from public applause and it’s not for your glory that you enter, you enter for God’s glory and his glory alone.

This is a door that causes transformation. It’s narrow or tight, a tight squeeze. It’s only big enough for you. You need to change “shape” to enter it, you must leave all your baggage behind. You have to leave the past things behind. Leave your sins behind. And maybe even leave family and friends behind.

This is a door to go through, you need to make the decision to look for it and then go through it. Many have looked for it and found it but have resisted going through it. Afraid of what might happen if they truly squeeze through. They aren’t really worried about what’s on the other side. They are worried about what others may think or what they have to leave behind. The truth is that what’s on the other side is more wonderful than anything they will ever leave behind.

Let’s pray. Lord, thank You so much for this passage. Thank You for the wisdom that You give us. Thank You for reminding us about salvation. And as You remind us about this narrow door, give us the courage to enter if we never have. If there are people watching the video who are a little bit scared, they know all Your stories, they come to church but they’re a little scared to enter through that door, I pray Father that you give them courage to be able to do it. And help us as we share the gospel with those around us, we would be honest about it. It’s a narrow door. It’s not a popular message. It’s a message where we have to change. We do have to leave our sins behind. Help us to be telling the truth in love as we share the gospel. Amen.
