In Luke chapter 15, verses 11-32, Jesus tells the Pharisees and the teachers of the law the parable of the lost son. It's a story of a son who boldly asks his father for his share of the property. The father then divides his property between his two sons. Not long after, the son packs up his belongings, moves to a foreign country, and squanders all his wealth in prodigal living. After spending all of his money, he becomes hungry. He comes to his senses, realizing that even his father’s workers have plenty to eat. The prodigal son goes back home and when he is still a long way off, his father sees him and runs out to meet him. Despite the son having wasted all of his inheritance, his father holds a feast and celebrates his son’s return. The brother feels that all this celebrating is unfair, but the father explained that his brother was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.

In this parable, we see three different characters: the father, the lost son, and the brother and we’ll look at each one separately and briefly. First, the prodigal son represents the world. He’s like a sinner whom at first, rejects God and lives the life he wants to live. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." When the lost son was hungry, it was like he reached rock bottom spiritually. He realized that he needed to be back with his family, just as it comes by revelation that we need to be reconciled to God.

Next, we see the father. The father is a type of Christ. He represents Jesus in every way we can imagine. When the son returns, he says he is no longer worthy to be his father’s son. However, the father’s response is to get the best robe, a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. The robe means forgiveness, the ring means restored identity, and the sandals mean renewed purpose. The father has every reason to be angry and not accept his son back, but he isn't angry. When he sees his son a long way off, he has compassion for him and runs out to meet him. And that is who Jesus is to us. Jesus says in John 6:37 “Everyone the Father gives me will come to Me and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.”

Finally, there is the brother of the lost son. The brother represents some believers that have a bound spirit. These people tend to be more legalistic in their ways. In verse 29, after the brother learns of his brother’s return and the subsequent celebration, he becomes angry and refuses to go into the party. He reasons with his father that he has been slaving for him for many years and has never disobeyed his orders. Furthermore, he seems perplexed that his father would kill the fatted calf and throw a party for someone who squandered his portion of the inheritance on prostitutes. 2 Cor. 3:6 speaks of God “who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

Let’s pray. Lord we thank you. As it says in the Word, “Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17). As we see in the nature and character of the father in the parable, it is his never-ending love for his son and how he delights in mercy. And we know this is all from you Lord. You gave us all these qualities. And more importantly, the ministry of reconciliation, that You reconciled the whole world to You in Christ, “not counting people’s sins against them. You have committed to us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5:19). Our identity is in You and we thank You are the God who heals the brokenhearted and restores others to their rightful place in the kingdom of God. Amen.
