Today's devotion is in Acts chapter 23.

Paul is standing before the High Council, "gazing intently" at them as he says with such conviction, "Brothers, I have always lived before God with a clear conscience!" He was instantly ordered to be slapped on the mouth for saying this, but he stood firmly and snapped back by saying, “God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite!" continuing on to ask, "What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?"

Now, let's pause for a minute in this dramatic dialogue and take a moment to note that Paul's attitude is about to change from firm and resistant to humble and submissive when he is accused of insulting a high priest. In verse 4 it says, those standing near Paul said to him, "Do you dare to insult God's high priest?" which Paul replies in verse 5 by saying, "I'm sorry, brothers. I didn't realize he was the high priest, for the Scriptures say, 'You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.'"

Then Paul realizes that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees. He shouted, "Brothers, I am a Pharisees, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!" "This divided the council--the Pharisees against the Sadducees--for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these.

This led to a great uproar, which grew so violent that the commander was afraid they would tear Paul apart, so he ordered soldiers to go and rescue Paul by force and take him back to the fortress, where the Lord appeared to Paul and said, "Be encouraged, Paul, just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well."

Now, this seems like a good happy ending, but the story continues with Paul's nephew hearing of a conspiracy to kill Paul. A group of more than 40 Jews got together and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. But good news! Paul was safely escorted far away to Governor Felix in Caesarea and was kept in the prison at Herod’s headquarters until people came to present their charges against him.

So, in this chapter, we first see Paul proclaim to the high council that he had always lived before God with a clear conscience. In 2 Corinthians (1:12), Paul also says to God’s church in Corinth, "We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom … " We not only see Paul live out these words in Acts 23, but throughout the Bible, living with this "clear conscience" is reiterated 12 times in the NLT. It is with this clear conscience, Paul remains unshaken through all he endures. He knows he will have God’s provision. He knows he can depend on God's grace. And with this clear conscience he is able to be firm when speaking to the high council or submissive when he is accused of insulting a high priest or wise to realize the council could be divided in uproar, all according to God’s will. In the concluding words of Hebrews, the author says, "Please pray for us, for our conscience is clear and we want to live honorably in everything we do."

Dear brothers and sisters, do you want to live honorably in everything you do? Do you want to enjoy a burden-free life living with a clear conscience before God? When writing about suffering for doing good, Peter the apostle says (in 1 Peter 3:13-16) 13 Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don't worry or be afraid of their threats. 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Both Paul and Peter the apostle lived a good life because they belonged to Christ, a good life not defined by worldly standards, but by God's standards. And they were able to live with a clear conscience because they depended on God's grace in all they did and not on their own wisdom. Let's pray we are able to do the same.

Heavenly Father, we come to you in prayer and petition, asking that you personally show each of us how to live with a clear conscience before You. May we grow in faith knowing that we can depend on Your grace, not on our own human wisdom. If we are asked about our hope as a believer, please give us the words to explain in a gentle and respectful way. Thank you, Father God, for the chance to pray for a clear conscience, for a good life that is defined by Your standards and not of this world. Thank you, Lord. We love you. We praise you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen!
